This workshop is only suitable for makers that have already begun their bowl turning journey and are relatively comfortable with turning simple bowls on their own. Ideally, workshop participants should either have their own lathe or regular access to a lathe to gain the most from these days. Adults only, or over 16 when accompanied by a paying adult.
This workshop will be limited to 4 participants.
There will be lathes set up for use over the course of the two days and the forge will also be on for the duration, allowing participants to seamlessly move between the two disciplines of turning and forging.
The workshop will be largely self-guided as participants may have different learning outcomes but possible themes could be:
- Common issues – undercutting cores, rims, details etc.
- Specific hooks for specific jobs
- Handled bowls
- End grain turning
- Hook tool forging for those with no prior experience
- Sharpening specifics
There will the opportunity to spend an equal amount of time looking at turning techniques and forging, grinding and sharpening tools. We will discuss individual outcomes on the morning of day one of the workshop and then design the two-day programme from there. There will be plenty of time to develop and practise new skills over the two day workshop, and participants should leave here buzzing about continuing to develop their turning and blacksmithing journey on their own.
To be held in our farmhouse workshop in Dundraw, Cumbria.
All tools and materials are provided but you may bring your own if you have them and we can advise on their suitability. The workshop includes the cost of gas and steel used for the forging elements of the workshop.
