Description
This workshop is suitable for all levels from complete beginners through to those that already have some experience of home blacksmithing. It also provides a perfect development opportunity for those that have already attended one of our popular single day slöjd knife forging workshops. Adults only, or over 16 when accompanied by a paying adult.
This workshop will be limited to 8 participants.
Quite possibly the best opportunity for hand forged carving knives…
This is almost a two for the price of one workshop – and a rare chance to catch two of these incredible makers in the same place, at the same time, working on the same thing!
Nic Westermann and Adrian Lloyd, half of team Hewn and Hone, will spend the weekend teaching you to create your own Scandinavian style scary sharp carving knives from raw materials.
This weekend workshop provides the time and opportunity to delve a bit deeper into the world of knife making. On the Saturday we will focus on slöjd style wood carving knives but there will be more flexibility over the size and style of blade you choose to make than there is on our single day course. The Sunday will be focussed more on detail knives such as chip carvers and Kolrosing blades. There will be ample time for more discussion about the processes involved, what’s actually happening inside the steel as it is worked and the way we skilfully use heat treatment to achieve the fine balance between sharpness and edge retention that we are seeking.
As always you’ll start with raw steel, bits of tree and some bark and be guided skilfully through the process from start to finish, having the opportunity to use and experience Hewn and Hone sharpening products and be taught how to achieve new levels of sharpness you thought never possible.
Over the course of the weekend workshop, you’ll be forging, grinding, heat treating, sharpening, carving, weaving and generally having the time of your life.
We plan that all attending this course leave with an outstanding Slöjd style carving knife and a detail blade of their choice, with carved and fitted handles and woven bark sheaths to protect the uber sharp edges.
This is sure to be a popular course, and one that may not be repeated regularly – so do you really want to miss out…?
All equipment, tools, materials, refreshments, biscuits and cake provided but you will need to bring a packed lunch with you for both of the days.
To be held in Nic’s workshop, a 10 minute drive from Machynlleth, Wales.
All tools and materials are provided but you may bring your own if you have them and we can advise on their suitability.
